The Feeding Habits of Domestic Turtles

The Feeding Habits of Domestic Turtles

Many animal lovers choose to own pet turtles for their ascetic beauty and relative low maintenance. Often however, pet turtle owners worry if their turtle is receiving enough nutrition to ensure a healthy life. Learning the feeding habits of turtles can be done by anyone and will ensure the physical and mental health of your turtle for years to come.

Pellets

Your pet turtle requires a lot of basic proteins, minerals and fiber that are contained in store-bought generic turtle pellets. Feeding your domestic turtle a pinch of pellets daily will ensure a healthy dose of these ingredients and will also ensure your turtle's mental health by having a consistent food supply.

Assorted Fruits

Feeding your turtle small assorted fruits, such as sliced grapes and cherries, helps provide your turtle with extra vitamins as well as giving your turtle some intellectual stimulation. The stimulation comes from tasting the new varieties of fruit that enhances your turtle's mental health.

Fish Fry

Domestic turtles, like all domestic animals, can have weight and diet issues when given a consistent food supply. Your domestic turtle doesn't have to work to receive its next meal. Like animals in zoos that are exposed to games and challenges to earn food, keeping your domestic turtle quick and healthy is important to consider. Feed your domestic turtle roughly three live fish fry a week and let your turtle chase them to catch its meal.

Greens and Vegetables

Greens and vegetables should be included in your turtle's meals. High in important nutrients for your turtle and great tasting (intellectual stimulation), greens and vegetables should be chopped up into bite-sized pieces for your domestic turtle. You should give it one cup at least once a week.
