Detox Plans to Follow

Selecting the right detox plan to follow depends on how long you wish to detox, and how restrictive of a diet you can tolerate. Some detox diets permit only water to be consumed for a few days, while other detox diets allow consumption of a wide array of plant-based foods. The detox plans below all vary in degrees of stringency and length.

Water Fasting

Try a water fast. It is the most basic detox diet, but also one of the most difficult to execute, as you drink only water and abstain from eating any food. You can do a water fast for just a day and still receive some benefit. Some people choose to go longer, even up to a month, though this great a length is not recommended.

Fasting for 24 hours can result in improved health. National Public Radio reports the number of influential figures from Socrates to Plato who all fasted for spiritual enlightenment. Dr. Naomi Neufeld outlines other benefits of fasting, which includes "retuning the body" by teaching cells to store energy more efficiently.

For a water fast, choose a day which requires little mental or physical effort. Do not exercise, as your body does not have the necessary fuel for energy. If new to fasting, do not fast for longer than 24 hours.

Juice Fasts

Juice fasts can be done for longer (one to seven days) due to the wider variety of food permitted. On a juice fast, you consume only juice from plant-based foods. Blended foods are also allowed, which allows for fatty foods like avocados. Select fruits like oranges, apples, peaches and other water-based fruits for juicing. Leafy greens, like kale and spinach, can also be juiced or blended. Bananas and avocados cannot be juiced but can be blended.

Though this detox diet is calorie restrictive, you still consume essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals and iron. Nonetheless, this detox diet is too low in calories, B-vitamins and fat to be sustainable in the long-term.

According to "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," juicing boosts the immune system and reduces the risk of illness. Juices from these plant-based sources are rich in antioxidants, phytochemicals and other nutrients that detoxify the body.

Raw Food Diet

The raw food diet tolerates a wide variety of foods for consumption, and can be sustained for a long period of time. Though this is an extreme detox diet, some choose to "go raw" for weeks, months, and even for their whole lives. A raw diet consists of eating uncooked fruits and vegetables, nuts, leafy greens, seeds, sprouts and other plant-based sources. These foods are consumed in any quantity desired. Raw foodists do not eat anything that requires preparation with an oven or microwave, so bread, pasta or any processed food is not allowed on this diet.

According to the book, "Raw Food Detox Diet," new raw foodists experience weight loss, shiny hair, improved skin and increased energy. Because raw foods are so dense in water and other nutrients, these foods help the body release toxins and clear the colon.

To follow a raw diet, ease into it by slowly replacing cooked foods, like crackers, with whole foods like cucumber slices. Replace favorite meals, like pasta, with raw pasta (which substitutes pasta noodles with zucchini noodles).
