About Pseudogout Diets

Pseudogout is a type of arthritis that causes swelling, pain and immobility in the joints. It gets its name because its symptoms resemble those of gout attacks, and patients may experience acute, sudden bouts of arthritic symptoms. The condition is caused by the presence of calcium pyrophosphate crystals in the cartilage and joint fluid, and the most commonly affected joints are the wrists and knees. In addition to a medicinal regimen, following a specific diet may help alleviate your symptoms.

Medical Treatment

Your rheumatologist will prescribe medications that address the symptoms of pseudogout, including steroids and non-steroid anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs). The most common NSAIDs are aspirin and ibuprofen. These medicines, in conjunction with a proper diet, can significantly decrease joint pain and stiffness.

Foods to Avoid

Foods that may stimulate inflammation should be avoided, as these can exacerbate your symptoms. Polyunsaturated vegetable oils and trans-fatty acids are known to encourage inflammation, so limit your intake of foods such as margarine, high-fat baked goods, french fries, potato chips and many other processed foods.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Certain foods may alleviate your arthritic symptoms and promote healthy joints. Omega-3 fatty acids are particularly beneficial, so increase your intake of sardines, salmon, other cold-water fish and flaxseed.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants have anti-inflammatory effects, helping to alleviate arthritic symptoms. Look for antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, and increase your consumption of apples, berries, broccoli, kidney and pinto beans, tomatoes, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, green tea, garlic and soy products. Choose organically grown products whenever possible.

Efficacy

Eating more of these foods has not been clinically proved to improve pseudogout, but their natural anti-inflammatory power may help. And even if it does not alleviate your condition, this recommended diet can only improve your general health, as antioxidants and other heart-healthy nutrients are beneficial to your body in other ways.
