Food Cures for Gout

Food Cures for Gout

If you suffer from gout, then your blood uric acid levels are usually too high. As a result, this substance forms sharp crystals that collect in your joints and tissues and cause excruciating pain. There are gout medications available which can be used along with dietary restrictions to treat the condition. However, many people cannot tolerate these drugs or wish to heal themselves with a natural method. Following a special diet can prevent gout attacks by eliminating foods that contribute to gout risk and uric acid production.

Foods to Avoid

Avoid shellfish if you have gout

Uric acid is a chemical that is beneficial at normal levels, and acts as an antioxidant that helps to protect the lining of your blood vessels. When levels become too high, as in people with gout, uric acid can cause problems. It occurs as a product of the breakdown of purines. Purines are widespread, natural compounds that are found in the cells of your body and many of the foods you eat.

You should choose foods that are low in purines to help reduce the level of uric acid in your blood. Meat and seafood are typically high-purine foods, and are associated with an increased risk of gout. Keep your intake of these foods to a minimum. Get most of your protein from sources such as soy, nuts, grains, eggs and dairy. A vegetarian-style diet can benefit people with gout. Drinking an occasional glass of wine will not affect your gout, but avoid drinking beer and hard liquor, as it can exacerbate your condition.

Healthy Food Choices to Manage Your Gout

Cherries have uric acid and inflammation reducing properties.

Your diet should emphasize complex carbohydrates. Eat an abundance of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. These foods are naturally laden with nutrients and vitamins. A study conducted in 2009, and published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, demonstrated that men who consumed 1000 mg. of Vitamin C daily, either through diet or supplements, cut their chances of having gout by 51 percent. Cherries and cherry products are particularly effective at alleviating symptoms of gout. Their ability to reduce uric acid and inflammation are well documented (The American Society for Nutritional Sciences, 2003).

Although some vegetables, such as beans, peas, asparagus, and mushrooms have significant amounts of purines, moderate intake of purine-rich vegetables are not associated with an increased risk of gout according to research in the 2004 New England Journal of Medicine. This study also shows that high consumption of dairy products actually decreases your risk, so incorporate plenty of low-fat milk, yogurt, and cheeses into your diet. Coffee, and plenty of it, also decreases your risk of gout. Drink four or more cups per day to increase the benefits

Your Choices Affect Your Health

Gout is a complex disorder that affects millions of people. Not only is it intensely painful, it can have long-term complications such as kidney and joint damage. Be proactive in the care of your health. You can decrease the risk of future attacks and damage to your body by selecting the right foods.
