Foods That Cause Gout

Gout is caused by the crystallization of uric acid in the body. Uric acid is usually filtered by your kidneys, but sometimes too much uric acid can build up or your body may make too much of it. Foods that are high in purines are to be avoided, as your body turns purines into uric acid. Typically, a healthy diet will relieve the symptoms of gout.

Red Meats

    Red meats are high in purines and should be avoided.

Seafood

    Sardines, mackerel, oysters and scallops can cause gout.

Vegetables

    Gout can be caused by vegetables such as spinach, asparagus and peas.

Dairy

    Butter, ice cream, whole milk and cheese can cause gout due to their high purine content.

Beer

    Beer is made from yeast and grains, which can increase uric acid in your body and cause gout.

Lentils

    Gout can be caused by lentils.
