The Curves program teaches healthy eating habits and focuses on behavioral changes such as shopping for healthy foods, avoiding emotional eating and incorporating exercise into the daily routine. Dieters choose limiting carbohydrates to 20 g for two weeks and 60 g thereafter or limiting calories to 1,200 and 1,600 thereafter. With both programs, meals emphasize protein.

Vegan Diet

    Those who want to change their habits may find commitment to a vegan diet for 30 days an easier shift into healthier foods. A vegan diet eliminates all animal-based products, limiting choices to plant-based foods. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans fill you up because of their high-fiber content, eliminating hunger. Giving up meat for one month gives you the chance to see if this is a diet you can stick to long term and generally causes weight loss during that month.

    The popular hCG diet requires followers to inject or swallow human chorionic gonadotropin hormone and follow a strict diet for about 30 days (no more than 45). The hormone supposedly affects the hypothalamus and so speeds up metabolism and reduces hunger. Proponents claim dieters can lose several pounds a day on the hCG diet, making it a popular choice for people looking forward to specific events for which they need to drop some weight.

Long-term Results

    Medical experts point out that most 30-day diets do not create long-lasting weight loss. While dieters may lose pounds over the month, the loss often is due to the extreme calorie restriction rather than miracle drugs or pills. For instance, the hCG diet restricts calorie intake to 500 calories. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies caused by such diets may adversely affect your health as may the extreme weight loss because pounds may be shed from muscle rather than fat.
