What to Feed Deer in the Winter

What to Feed Deer in the Winter

During the winter months, deer will often migrate from high elevations down into valleys where the temperature is higher and there is less snow. Deer may have to work a bit harder for their dinner, but are capable of finding food even in deep snow.

Don't Feed the Deer

Wildlife biologists do not recommend that people feed deer during the winter.

Digestion

A rapid change in a deer's diet may cause illness or death. Deer have stomachs that are developed for very specific types of food found in the wild.

Automobiles

Feeding deer during the winter will draw a number of deer to the feeding area. Since they are in closer human contact, they are much more likely to be hit and killed by cars.

Balanced Population

Deer population decreases in the winter. The species weeds out sick and old animals to maintain a healthy population. Supplemental feeding may keep deer alive, but not for long since their habitat can only support a specific number of animals.

Healthy Diet

Deer will maintain a healthy plant-based diet if they are not given supplemental food during the winter.
