Diet to Relieve Gout

Diet to Relieve Gout

Gout is a form of arthritis that causes pain and swelling in your joints--usually in your feet, and commonly in your big toe. Although there are prescription drugs that can treat gout, changing your diet also can relieve discomfort from this disease.

What is Gout?

Gout occurs when your kidneys are unable to remove uric acid from your body properly. Uric acid is a human waste product that your kidneys filter out through urine. When uric acid builds up in the body, it crystallizes and congregates in the joints of your lower extremities, where it causes inflammation and intense pain.

No Purines

You can treat gout by simply improving your diet. The first step is to remove purines from your diet. Purines include a class of organic compounds found in food that are broken down into uric acid. Foods high in purines include herring, mackerel and fish eggs.

Organ Meats

Pay special attention to organ meats such as kidneys, liver and brains when looking to remove purines from your diet. Meat broths and gravy also have elevated levels of purines that can lead to bouts of gout.

Low-Purine Diet

Foods low in purines include nuts, milk, pasta and fruit. Coffee and tea are also low in purine, but take care to use them in moderation or dehydration may result. Dehydration decreases the amount of water in the body, which will increase uric acid levels. For the same reason, alcohol is a big no-no.
