In fact, he has stated that for most of his clients (who do not want to get "bodybuilder lean"), just following the 7 Habits is the beginning and the end of his nutritional advice--they can accomplish their physique goals that easily.

The Habits

    So without further ado, we present the 7 Habits.

    1.) Consume small, frequent meals every two to three hours for a total of five to eight meals a day.
    2.) Consume lean protein with each meal--meat, chicken, fish, or eggs.
    3.) Consume fruits and vegetables with every meal.
    4.) Only consume carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables.
    5.) Consume at least 25 percent of your daily calories from a blend of fats, including animal fat, fat from items like avocados and coconuts, and oils like fish, flax and olive.
    6.) Drink only zero-calorie beverages--preferably only water and green tea.
    7.) Stick to solid meals--no liquid nutrition.

    And that's that. By following those seven habits prior to your surgery, you will shed pounds and be in optimal shape to recover quickly and efficiently. Depending on how much time you have prior to surgery day, you might want to adopt the habits slowly to avoid a "cold turkey" approach that often fails. By adding one additional habit per week, you can ease your way into the program, making it more likely to be a permanent change. We recommend beginning by cutting out all calorie-containing beverages, then complying with the all-solid-meal rule. How to Detox on a Lemon Diet

Even if we lead health-conscious lives, there are toxins in the air we breathe and the food we eat that can lead to permanent damage to our physical and mental health over time. The lemon detox diet is designed to not only help you lose weight, but to flush the build-up of unhealthy toxins and chemicals from your body.

Instructions

    1

    Prepare one week before you start the lemon detox diet program by cutting back on the amount of regular toxins you put into your body. Reduce your caffeine intake, cut back on the number of cigarettes you smoke, and cut out as much junk food as you can. This will prepare your body in advance, making some of the side effects easier to cope with.

    Set aside a period of at least three days during which you will have minimal outside stress. Outside stress can make a rigorous, fasting diet even more difficult, so you may want to do this diet during a holiday weekend.

    Mix two tablespoons of lemon juice and two tablespoons of maple syrup into a 10 oz. glass of water on the morning of the first day of your diet. Drink six glasses of this mixture throughout the day.

    Drink glasses of plain water in between the detox mixture, but do not eat anything else throughout the day. The water, lemon juice and maple syrup mixture will flush the toxins from your body.

    Repeat this process for up to three days, drinking only plain water between glasses of lemon and maple syrup water.

    Slowly ease yourself back into eating regular food on the fourth day. Don't overdo it, as this may cause you to feel nauseous and sick.

Lemon & Maple Syrup Cleanses

The lemon cleanse has existed for over 40 years, but it has become more popular in recent years. Cleansing is important to eliminate excess toxins from our bodies and to improve our health by minimizing headaches, fatigue and other ailments. While cleansing is not a diet, some people do lose weight while participating in the cleanse.

The Founder

    Stanley Burroughs developed the lemon cleanse in his 1976 book, "Healing for the Age of Enlightenment," in which he discussed several aspects of unconventional healthcare. He also wrote a later book, just pertaining to this cleanse, titled "The Master Cleanser." You should read one of his books before beginning a cleanse to avoid any errors (see Resources below).

The Ingredients

    While on the lemon cleanse, you will drink 6 to 12 glasses of "lemonade" prepared with of a lemon, 2 tbsp. pure maple syrup, 1/10 tsp. of cayenne pepper and 8 oz. of water. Lemons offer vitamins and minerals, and maple syrup is considered one of the rare good, unprocessed sugars that offers micronutrients.

The Process

    Drink 6 to 12 glasses of lemonade a day and make sure you have ingredients with you wherever you are. You are not to eat or drink anything else, just drink a glass of lemonade whenever hungry. It is recommended to do the cleanse for 10 days, but it can be done safely for up to 40 days.

Purpose

    You should use the cleanse when you want to get rid of toxins from your body, or to remove waste from your joints, or if you want to get a more youthful look and feeling. You may also administer a cleanse after you have been ill and want to rid your body of germs.

Not a Starvation Diet

    The lemon cleanse is gentler on the body because you are still receiving vitamins and minerals through the lemon juice and maple syrup. The maple syrup provides for the body's calorie needs, while cayenne pepper, lemon juice and water filter out toxins.

Plant-based diets are healthy when planned correctly, according to the American Heart Association. Think of plant proteins as a puzzle, where a full picture is available, but which requires a few different pieces before it is complete. Eating a wide variety of protein-rich sources is the first step to guaranteeing sufficient protein intake, defined by the USDA as 56 g per day for a 19-plus-year-old man and 46 g per day for a 14-plus-year-old woman.

Quinoa

    Quinoa, a grain similar to rice in size but with six times as much protein, is a complete protein source used in quinoa salads and with a variety of flavors. With 24 g of protein per uncooked cup, the crunchy seed contains nine essential amino acids.

Buckwheat

    Buckwheat--commonly used as an alternative to wheat, oats, rye and barley--has 22 g of protein per cup. Rich in B vitamins and tied to improved cholesterol levels, it contains eight essential amino acids while providing a distinctive and nutty taste.

Spirulina

    Spirulina, a blue green algae, is a complete protein also packed with B vitamins, beta carotene, vitamin E, zinc, copper, magnesium and essential fatty acids. Guacamole, smoothies, or energy bar recipes all become protein-rich when spirulina is included. With 64 g of protein to a cup, spirulina is a naturally high source of needed protein.

Soy Products

    Dry roasted soybeans--marketed as edamame--are nutrient powerhouses with 16 g of protein per cup. Products originating from soybeans are also powerful sources of protein. Made from cooked and fermented whole soybeans, tempeh (with 30.78 g protein per cup), can be sauteed, boiled, fried or baked. Tofu (16.77 g per cup) and soymilk (7 g per liquid cup) all pack a solid nutritional punch from soy protein. Seiten, unsafe for those with celiac disease but ideal for those with an aversion to soy, offers 30 g of wheat gluten protein per cup. A surprisingly chewy protein source, seitan is a plant-based staple with a texture comparable to meat, with the right preparation.

Legumes

    While the class of vegetable called legumes includes soybeans, it also includes other beans, peas and lentils. Considered a healthy substitute for meat by the Mayo Clinic, legumes are a protein source lower in fat and cholesterol than any animal product. Fava beans, which mature into lima beans, are packed with 22 g of protein per cup. Black beans, pintos, lentils, black eyed peas, garbanzo beans, chickpeas and kidney beans follow closely behind with 14 to 17 g of protein per half cup. Available widely, and low in calories with cholesterol lowering properties, legumes are a protein powerhouse.

What Are the Benefits of Phytosterols?

Phytosterols are plant fat. They are the naturally occurring compounds within plants that act as a catalyst for certain plant cell functions. The equivalent to the phytosterols found in plants is the cholesterol found in the human body. Ingesting phytosterols, in foods and in supplement form, may help you control your cholesterol levels. Phytosterols may also aid in joint health and in boosting your immune system.

Function

    Certain cells in your body process cholesterol; they metabolize both good and bad cholesterol, either for use or for waste. If you have an excess of bad cholesterol (LDL) the bad cholesterol "dominates" the process. More bad cholesterol stays in the system and the good cholesterol (HDL) goes to waste. The ingestion of phytosterols sets up a competitive environment. The cells are more attracted to phytosterols and so the excess bad cholesterol is processed as waste. The good cholesterol can now be used for cell and organ functions.

Effects

    The phytosterols, then, act as a control in your body to regulate cholesterol levels. Were you to take a supplement containing phytosterols, your cholesterol levels may fall back into the normal range, but it would likely take several weeks to do so. This plant compound is non-soluble, that is, the body uses it then disposes of it. It's not until the cholesterol processing cells have "routinely" recognized the plant compound as cholesterol that cholesterol levels are regulated.

Benefits

    Cholesterol control isn't the only health benefit being attributed to phytosterols. Beta sitosterol, a specific phytosterol compound, has been shown to reduce symptoms brought on by an enlarged prostate. This same compound is thought to reduce joint inflammation by regulating the synthesis of cytokines. There are also studies that indicate phytosterols may inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Considerations

    In the book, "Phytosterols as Functional Food Components and Nutraceuticals" by Paresh C. Dutta, the author discusses the various studies being done in regard to phytosterols and cancer. He explains that the studies have mostly been done on groups with compromised immune systems and while there does appear to be a link between cancer cell death and phytosterols, it's questionable whether phytosterols could be considered a preventative or a cure.

Sources

    Phytosterols are found in most plants in low concentrations. The foods with higher concentrations include nuts and legumes, oranges, bananas, beetroot and brussel sprouts. Those with exceptionally higher concentrates include rice bran, corn, wheat germ and flax seed. If your cholesterol levels are within the normal range, and you're in good health, regular intake of these foods should be a sufficient amount of phytosterols to aid in maintaining good health. Should you have high cholesterol or an enlarged prostate, or suffer from joint inflammation, you may wish to consult your physician about taking a phytosterol supplement.

Types of Cardiac Diets

There are many different types of diets that can improve cardiac health. These diets are designed with low-fat options that are beneficial for a healthy heart. A diet with good fats such as olive oil as a main staple is also good for the heart. Maintaining cardiac health can add years and longevity to our lives. South Beach Diet

    The South Beach Diet is a cardiac diet that was created by heart doctor Arthur Agatston . The South Beach Diet has three phases. The first is strict and involves eating only low-fat foods in small portions and no carbohydrates.

    The second phase of the diet involves adding good carbohydrates such as carrots back into the diet. Once a person has achieved her desired results, the next step is to maintain the weight by entering Phase 3 of the diet, which is based on making healthy lifestyle choices.

    The amount of time a person spends in each phase depends on the amount of weight that needs to be lost. Most people need to spend about two to three weeks on Phase 1 and then two months on Phase 2.

Reducing the toxic burden on the body can improve overall heath and heart function.

    Another type of cardiac diet is a low-fat low sodium diet. Too much fat and salt in our diet is bad for the heart. A low-sodium, low-fat diet involves eating less than 1,800 calories per day of foods that don't contain high levels of sodium or fat. You want to avoid foods such as fried and processed foods. You also want to avoid canned soups because they contain high levels of sodium.

    Legend has it that snakes ate fennel to promote the shedding of their skin and to hone their vision. Puritans reportedly ate it because it suppressed their appetite during times of religious fasting and it also helped keep them awake. Legend also has it that tucking a sprig of fennel into a horse's harness will discourage flies.

What is Fennel, Exactly?

    Current opinion is that fennel tea helps relieves the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, including gas and bloating, because it soothes the gastrointestinal tract; however, too much fennel may have the opposite effect and cause spasms, so be careful about how much you consume.

    Fennel stimulates milk production (lactation) and has the same impact on the body as does estrogen. Many claim that drinking fennel tea is an effective treatment for conjunctivitis (eye infection).

    If all of the claims about fennel are true, we should all be consuming it on a regular basis because fennel is an excellent source of Vitamin C and Vitamin B. It is beneficial to the immune system and may reduce cholesterol levels, is an excellent source of fiber and may prevent colon cancer.

    Anethole found in the fennel oil reduces inflammation, so it would be good for arthritics. Anethole is thought to reduce recurrence of cancer. Research has shown that the "tumor necrosis factor" in humans is actually shut down when anethole is consumed.

    If you have bad breath, drink some fennel tea, which reportedly freshens your breath. Fennel is also considered a good remedy for colds and can be used as a diuretic if you are full of fluids.

Warnings

    Pregnant women should avoid drinking fennel tea because it can act as an uterine stimulant. Do not apply fennel directly to your skin because it can irritate skin. Drinking copious amounts of fennel is not recommended because it can cause hallucinations and make your muscles spastic. Because fennel can disturb the nervous system if too much is consumed, discuss the consumption of fennel with your doctor or someone who is well-versed in herb usage.

Low-Sugar High-Protein Foods

Whether you have serious health problems or are just looking to lose weight, implementing a diet that is low in sugar and high in protein can be beneficial to your health and wellness. Most Americans consume far too much sugar which contributes to many health problems. Lean protein can help you build muscle, lose weight and is an integral part of a healthy diet.

Less Sugar, More Protein

    According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the average American consumes about 318 calories worth of sugar daily, which is about three times the recommended amount of 100 to 150 calories per day from sugar. The AHA found that the majority of these extra calories come from liquid sugars such as soft drinks and juices. Sugar consumption contributes to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. A diet high in protein can help maintain healthy muscles, bones, skin, hair and blood.

Low Sugar Foods

    Many foods are low in sugar and high in nutritional value. Foods low in sugar are vegetables, fruit, lean meats, whole grains like quinoa and brown rice and low fat dairy products like milk and yogurt. Natural sugars found in fruit and dairy products are not the same as added sugars found in cake, cereal, chocolate, cookies and ice cream. Natural sugars should not be included in daily sugar intake totals. Added sugars should be eliminated as much as possible, or at the very least, replaced with sugar-free or sugar substitute varieties. The American Heart Association recommends limiting sugar intake to under 25 grams per day.

High Protein Foods

    Protein is essential to good health, helps the body build muscle and burns fat. The best sources of protein are lean cuts of meat such as fish, eggs, chicken and turkey. Beans, nuts, whole grains, skim milk and low-fat yogurt are other good sources. For vegetarians, or those with dietary restrictions, soy or whey protein powder supplements are a good choice. If you use supplements, choose those low in carbohydrates, sugar, sodium and cholesterol. Other sources of protein are pork, beef and whole milk; however, these foods are higher in fat and calories and should be eaten in moderation. The U.S.D.A. recommends two to three servings a day.

How to Make Low Carb Breakfast Casserole

Whether you are following the South Beach, Atkins, Slow-Carb or any other diet that recommends restricting your intake of carbohydrates and increasing your consumption of protein, making a low-carb breakfast casserole is one easy option to make breakfast for a whole week. Once made, the casserole will keep for up to a week in the refrigerator. Every morning simply cut a slice of the casserole and reheat it in the microwave for an easy, tasty low-carb breakfast. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

    Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Grease a glass baking dish with butter or olive oil using a paper towel and set aside.

    Crack a dozen eggs into a large bowl. Whisk them together.

    Fry strips of bacon, ham or Canadian bacon; links of sausage or ground beef in a frying pan over medium-high hear with some olive oil. Pat the excess oil off with paper towels. Dice the meat and set it aside. For a vegetarian breakfast casserole, omit the meat.

    Wash vegetables. This could include mushrooms, zucchini, tomato, green onion and bell pepper. Cut the undesirable sections off the vegetables, such as the stem and seeds of the bell pepper. Dice all the vegetables into uniform pieces.

    Arrange the meat and vegetables in the bottom of the greased baking dish.

    Add extra flavorings and ingredients to the greased baking dish to taste. You can add ricotta or cottage cheese, shredded Cheddar cheese and dried rosemary for an Italian flavor. Or add chopped green chilies, canned and drained black beans, and chili powder for a Mexican flavor. Or add chopped olives, spinach leaves and crumbled Feta cheese for a Greek flavor. Or add cooked lentils and garam masala spice for an Indian flavor.

    Pour the whisked eggs on top of the other ingredients. Sprinkle shredded cheese on top, such as cheddar, mozzarella or Monterey Jack cheese. Put the baking dish in the oven.

    Bake the casserole until golden brown on top. Take out of the oven and let cool before serving.

Natural Diet Basics

    A natural diet should contain protein, vegetables, grains and supplements. Use organic foods when possible. Wash all non-organic produce since it is often exposed to insecticides. A simple recipe includes equal parts protein, vegetables and grains. Vegetables are low in calories and can be given more freely than the other ingredients.

    Protein can come in the form of meat or other sources. Beef, chicken, turkey, pork and lamb are ideal meat choices for protein. Alternatives include eggs, tofu, cottage cheese and fish. Cut up the meat into pieces for your dog. Allowing your dog to chew and grind the meat is beneficial for his dental health.

    Vegetables are necessary for a natural diet because they are a good source of vitamins, fiber and minerals. Alfalfa sprouts, beets, bell peppers, carrots, celery, fresh corn, cucumbers and zucchini can be included in the diet without cooking. Pure or juice these vegetables to make them easy for the dog to digest. Broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, peas and potatoes are perfect choices, too, but they need to be cooked first. Giving an uncooked and unpeeled carrot to your dog is good for his teeth and gums.

    Grains supply your dog's brain and muscles with the necessary fuel to function properly. When feeding your dog grains, soften them first. Dogs have a much shorter intestinal tract and require most foods to be pre-digested (softened or pureed) first. The best choices of grains are barley, brown rice, cornmeal and oatmeal.

    Supplements are needed to complete a natural dog diet. Include calcium, essential fatty acids, Vitamin A, Vitamin B complex, Vitamin E and digestive enzymes.

Dangerous Items

    Options are numerous for ingredients in a natural diet for a dog. There are also a lot of foods you must avoid to ensure safety of your canine. The items listed below can cause toxicity, gastrointestinal problems, digestive tract obstructions and lacerations, kidney failures and even death. Foods and items that should be avoided include alcoholic beverages, avocados, bones from meat sources, cat food, chocolate, coffee, tea, citrus oil extracts, fat trimmings, grapes, raisins, hops, human vitamins with iron, large amounts of liver, macadamia nuts, marijuana, dairy products, moldy or spoiled foods, mushrooms, onions or garlic in any form, persimmons, fruit seeds, fruit pits, green potatoes, rhubarbs, tomato leaves, tomato stems, raw eggs, raw fish, salt, string, sugary foods, table scraps, tobacco and yeast dough. Typical colon detox diets last anywhere from a couple of days to five days or more--and generally include a liquid-only phase, a soft-food phase, and the consistent inclusion in one's diet of raw and fresh vegetables, fruits and high-in-fiber foods.

First Two Days

    The first two days should see you on a strict liquid-only diet. This will not be fun--you won't be able to eat many of the things you feel like eating. This is a critical step in your colon detox, however. The first two days, then, shouldn't see any solid food pass your lips. Stick to juice--any kind of juice. Whenever hunger comes calling, drink more juice.

Next Two Days

    Now it's time to try a few easy-to-digest solid foods. While you're still not ready for a steak or potato chips, it is okay to eat items like pudding, yogurt, rice, a milkshake, applesauce, plain noodles and oatmeal or porridge. At this point, a salad (minus the dressing) is always a good idea. Keep drinking water and juice--in fact, try incorporating at least eight cups of water a day into your regular, permanent diet from here on out. Soup, too, is a good idea.

Day Five and Beyond

    Focus on increasing the amount of vegetables and fruit in your diet. And one more thing: fiber. Vegetables and fruit take care of much of your fiber needs (as long as they are fresh and raw), but you can additionally get much-needed fiber in foods like whole-wheat spaghetti, barley, oat bran, bran flakes, oatmeal, split peas, lentils, black beans, lima beans and baked beans. Following this five-day plan--then incorporating more fruits, veggies, and high-fiber foods into your diet on a permanent basis--will not only rid your colon of most toxins, but also lead to better health over the long term.

    Melt the peanut butter and lard together on the stove or in the microwave.

    Remove the mixture from the stove or microwave and pour it into a large mixing bowl.

    Add 2 cups of quick oats, 2 cups of corn meal, 1 cup of white flour, 1 cup of unsalted sunflower seeds, 1 cup of unsalted peanuts and 1 cup of whole corn kernels. Mix thoroughly into a peanut butter-like consistency.

    Pour the mixture into an 8-by-8 inch foil pan and press firmly with the spatula. Set it aside and allow it to cool completely.

    Remove the hardened mixture from the pan and slice it into quarters. This quartered size should fit most suet-style squirrel feeders.

Low Carb Diet for Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism occurs when the body doesn't produce enough of a certain kind of hormone. That failure disturbs the natural balance of chemical reactions in the body. An underactive thyroid typically causes weight gain. To combat this, some patients have subscribed to the low carb diet craze to lose weight. Little research has been done on the scientific impact of low carb diets on thyroid disease.

The best way to combat weight gain is to take prescribed medicine, exercise four to five times a week and follow a special diet.

What a Low Carb Diet Is

    Low carb diets became a craze in the late 1990s into the early 2000s. Dieters restrict or eliminate all carbohydrate foods during the initial two-week phase of dieting, then slowly introduce small amounts of natural or whole grain carbs back into their diets.

    The South Beach Diet and the Atkins Diet lead the charge in published low carb diets, with many dieters touting their results.

    Begin the diet in one- to two-week phases. Eat only protein and non-starchy vegetables during the initial, strictest two weeks. Foods in the initial phase include all meat, low fat dairy, fresh vegetables with the exception of carrots, corn and potatoes and eggs. Add whole grain cereals, bread and pasta into your diet in very small amounts during weeks three and four. Fruit can also be eaten in small amounts during this phase. All foods, with the exception of sugar and processed white products, are given the green light by the end of the diet.

    The end result is that you should lose weight and reduce or smash your sugar cravings completely.

Dieting and Hypothyroidism

    According to Cleveland Clinic endocrinologist Dr. Mario Skugor, diet alone cannot reverse the cause of an underactive thyroid.

    However, diet can help to manage your condition, he adds. Pair your healthy diet with physician prescribed treatment for weight loss results. Diet alone cannot manage your underactive thyroid and promote weight loss, so seeing your doctor first is an important step to getting your condition under control.

Low Carb Diet and Hypothyroidism

    Once you are under a doctor's care and are taking prescribed medication, you can begin a low carb regimen to kick start weight loss.

    Follow the low carb diet such as Atkins or South Beach. Drink plenty of water and get exercise while following the diet.

    Low carb dieting has one major drawback to people with an underactive thyroid--some foods that contain an excessive amount of iodine may exacerbate hypothyroid symptoms and weight gain. Foods such as seafood, sea salt, eggs, dairy products and vegetables grown in iodine-rich soil should be examined. Because these foods play a major role in low carb dieting you should be selective of which proteins and vegetables you choose.

    Instead of seafood, eat chicken or tofu. Steer clear of eggs and dairy. Eat organically grown vegetables to reduce the number of chemicals that are comingled with the soil.

Cardiac Low-Sodium Diet

If you are a cardiac patient, your doctor may prescribe a low-sodium diet, in addition to medication and other therapies. A low-sodium diet lowers hypertension (high blood pressure) and may lower your risk of a heart attack or stroke. Since sodium causes the body to retain fluids, you may also be prescribed a low-sodium diet for congestive heart failure.

Low-Sodium Diet

    On a low-sodium diet, your doctor will ask you to cut your sodium intake to between 1,500 mg to 2,300 mg of sodium per day. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the lower number is a better goal for lowering blood pressure. Eat foods lower in sodium as part of a healthy diet and exercise to improve your overall cardiac health.

    Start by making subtle changes in your diet. Banish the salt shaker from the table. Season your foods with herbal blends that do not contain salt, garlic, lemon juice and hot pepper sauce. Do not use soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce because they are high in sodium.

    Choose fresh and frozen vegetables instead of canned vegetables. Create your own fresh rice and pasta dishes instead of using box mixes for side dishes. Check the labels of processed foods for the amount of sodium per serving, and limit your portion size to the amount listed, or realize that you are increasing your sodium intake proportionately to your portion size. Avoid canned soups and make your own instead using fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meat and low-sodium broth or bouillon.

    Eat unsalted nuts or air-popped popcorn seasoned with herbs instead of salty chips or pretzels for a snack. Do not leave salt out of your baking recipes at home, because the salt interacts chemically with the other ingredients to produce the desired results. Instead, eat fruit sorbets or ice pops for dessert instead of baked goods.

    Keep in mind that just because a food advertises that it has "no salt added," it does not mean it doesn't contain sodium. Sodium occurs in many foods naturally, so always read the sodium content on the label. Keep a food journal to help you keep track of your sodium intake.

According to the Mayo Clinic, cardiac disease is the leading global killer of men and women. Cardiac patients are being treated for a wide range of diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease, heart rhythm abnormalities (arrhythmias) and congenital heart defects. Cardiac diseases generally refer to disorders involving blocked or narrowed blood vessels that can cause heart attacks, strokes or chest pain (angina). Many cardiac patients lessen their risk of cardiac episodes with healthy lifestyle choices, including proper diet and exercise.

The DASH Diet

    The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet is prescribed for many cardiac patients by their physicians and has been proven to alleviate cardiac symptoms in National Institutes of Health (NIH) studies. The DASH diet is based on a low-sodium, fiber-rich eating plan that contains vegetables, fruits and low-fat dairy products.

Reduce Sodium and Increase Potassium

    Selecting foods low in salt and sodium as well as high in potassium are key components to healthy eating for cardiac patients. Excessive salt intake increases body fluid volume, impairing the body's natural blood-pressure regulators. The NIH recommends limiting sodium intake to between 1,500mg and 2,400mg per day. This equals approximately 2/3 to 1 tsp. of salt. Processed, overly-salted prepared foods such as canned salted vegetables, fast food and frozen pizza should also be omitted from your diet. A low-sodium and high-potassium diet also reduces the effects of adrenaline on the body during times of stress.

Fiber-RIch Diet

    A high-fiber diet is effective in the prevention and treatment of many types of cardiac diseases. Water-soluble fibers such as oat bran and psyllium are of particular benefit in reducing cholesterol and blood pressure.

Vegetarian Lifestyle

    NIH studies have found that vegetarians typically have lower blood-pressure levels as well as a lower incidence of all cardiac diseases. These studies determined that a standard vegetarian diet includes more fiber, complex carbohydrates, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and vitamins C and A, in addition to a lower intake of sodium. All of these factors are believed to contribute to the prevention of cardiac episodes.
